The pressure dew point requirement should be determined according to the application rather than automatically selecting the most expensive drying system. General factory applications may have relatively moderate requirements, while pharmaceutical, electronics, instrumentation, and specialized manufacturing processes may require very dry compressed air. Desiccant dryers can achieve lower dew points than typical refrigerated dryers, but they may consume additional energy or compressed air for regeneration. Therefore, the entire air-treatment system should be designed around actual process requirements.

Maintenance is essential for maintaining the performance of an oil-free screw compressor. Although these machines eliminate oil from the compression chamber, they are not maintenance-free. Bearings, seals, timing gears, motors, valves, coolers, filters, sensors, and control components all require inspection and servicing. Preventive maintenance can identify problems before they result in unexpected shutdowns.

Regular inspection and timely replacement or cleaning can help maintain airflow and protect internal components. One advantage of oil-free technology is the reduction of oil-related consumables and the elimination of oil contamination from the compression chamber. Conventional oil-injected compressors require oil changes, oil filters, separators, and other oil-management components. Oil-free compressors do not eliminate all maintenance expenses, but they can simplify certain aspects of compressed-air management. This can be particularly valuable in applications where contamination control is more important than achieving the lowest initial purchase price.
